Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Trust "Champhibians" Scheme

If your school has a pond or is looking at building one, this scheme is a great way to involve students through supporting the wildlife that emerges there.

Action: Build or adopt a pond to support wildlife

Who: School leadership + Eco club

Steps:

  • Create a small wildlife pond OR adopt a local one

  • Ensure it is safe and maintained

  • Avoid chemicals and pollution

Impact: Provides habitat for amphibians and boosts biodiversity

Measure: Presence of species (frogs, newts, insects)

Green Gyms

Action: Create a school-based “Green Gym” programme or partner with local schemes.

Who: Students + teachers

Steps:

  • Partner with local Green Gym groups (e.g. Camden, Hackney)

  • Schedule regular outdoor sessions.

  • Integrate into PE or enrichment.

Impact: Improves biodiversity + student well being

Measure: Number of sessions + student participation

Why this works: Green Gym shows that hands-on conservation improves both health and the environment at the same time.

School Green Spaces

Action: Use students to manage and improve school green spaces actively

Who: Eco club/classes

Steps:

  • Plant trees or hedgerows

  • Create wildflower areas

  • Maintain gardens or ponds.

Impact: Boosts biodiversity on the school site

Measure: Area of green space improved

Based on Green Gym activities like planting and habitat creation

Climate Anxiety Session

Action: Arrange a climate anxiety session to discuss with and support students and members of staff anxiety surrounding climate change.

Who: Teachers or Eco club

Steps:

  • Open a discussion at school to determine if this is something students want and would benefit from.

  • Identify key points of anxiety and stress for students.

  • Set up an monthly/weekly after school/lunchtime club for regular meetings

  • Use resources below to help create a safe space that can help students.
