Most carbon within healthy ecosystems is stored **beneath the vegetation**, in the soil.

A mature oak stores several tonnes of carbon, but:

can often store even more carbon over time through soil accumulation.

## Best UK Plants for Long-Term Carbon Storage

These species can continue accumulating carbon for centuries if left standing.

### Scrub (Often Under-Appreciated)

Examples:

* Blackthorn

Benefits include:

* Natural regeneration

Allowing scrub to develop naturally may often be more effective than planting rows of trees.

Carbon remains stored only while ecosystems remain healthy.

### 1. Increase Soil Carbon

Actions include:

* Minimise digging
* Apply mulch and compost
* Leave leaf litter
* Reduce mowing

Soil carbon may remain stored for decades or centuries.

### 2. Protect Mature Vegetation

Protecting a century-old tree generally stores more carbon than replacing it with a sapling.

Conserving existing habitats is usually better than replacing them.

* Burning garden waste

### 4. Use Timber Wisely

If trees must be removed:

Draining wetlands exposes stored organic matter to oxygen, rapidly releasing carbon.
