EV Charging Point Problem solving:

Chat text:

00:03:36 Graham Stoddart-Stones: Some interesting links in advance:

00:20:00 Cara Naden: Is that for any council across the country Amanda? Great to hear.

00:21:14 Cara Naden: Reacted to "https://www.slcc.co...." with ๐Ÿ’š

00:21:40 Amanda Davis: Nationally available, though unsure if the qualification and training relates to England alone

00:22:39 Amanda Davis: ยฃ120+VAT. Offers a qualification and 4 CPD points if you are a clerk. Run over 2 sessions online.

00:24:35 Cara Naden: LEVI funding for the transport authority should be able to be accessed for EV charging in local town and parish council areas for on street charging but also public accessible car parks where there is limited off street parking.

00:33:15 Cara Naden: There is also in addition to ZapMap Open Charge Map for ever broader EV charging networks including over into Europe for taking your EV on holiday..

00:35:28 lisa scott: I'm an EV owner only since September, it's been a great learning curve. Our District council have made a complete hash. Parking spaces take 1.5 ICE spaces, so loss of spaces. Parking is limited to 3 hours, which doesn't fit with a working day (if it were 4 hours, you could pop out and move the car at lunch time, but that's almost impossible with a 3 hour limit). That stops workers from using them. Residents can't make reasonable use because the chargers turn off after 3 hours even at night. Also at night, the spaces are not restricted to EV, so people with ICE block them. During the day charges are for charging plus parking charge! I'm hoping we at our Parish Council will be able to do something more usable when we install our car park (soon)!

00:35:48 Jackie Jones: About those visitors โ€ฆ if passing and wanting a quick charge en route they'll be wanting a fast charger. I see from Zap Map that the Eyre Arms near Grindleford has fast (50kW) chargers. They're not going to use the slower (7kW?) chargers that a person might use overnight

00:38:27 Andrew Maliphant: I spoke to a Devon parish a couple of years ago that were developing a new car park, and the questions was, how to gauge how many chargers to install? Grindleford's experience is invaluable on this point!

00:40:05 Cara Naden: There are some councils like Somerset Council who have an EV Charging Strategy with the requirements for EV Charging facilities across the county.

00:40:14 Sarah Barker: I have been talking with Connected Kerb

00:40:50 lisa scott: Terminology - 'fast' chargers are not fast, they are also known as destination chargers and take several hours to charge, you use your own cable. 'Rapid' chargers are those about 30Kw (up to a massive 350Kw for 20 minutes ish to charge) and come with their own cable.

00:42:06 lisa scott: many EV charger companies will supply their charger and take on the maintenance for a cut of the charging payment. Connected Curb are brill.

00:42:41 Cara Naden: Reacted to "many EV charger comp..." with ๐Ÿ‘

00:43:14 Cara Naden: And some EV Charging companies may even share some of the income generated from EV users

00:43:54 lisa scott: Lobby your MP, one reason why public charging is so expensive is because it is subject to 20% VAT, charging at home is only 5%

00:44:09 Cara Naden: Oxfordshire Council also quite advanced in EV Charging including the trial of cable gullies across footpaths for home charging without off street parking.

00:44:17 Cara Naden: Reacted to "Lobby your MP, one r..." with ๐Ÿ‘

00:45:45 Sarah Barker: Kent CC working with Connected Kerb

00:46:09 lisa scott: Reacted to "Kent CC working with..." with ๐Ÿ‘

00:47:19 lisa scott: and Surrey CC

00:47:36 Andrew Maliphant: Disley Parish Council in Cheshire have installed two charge points, which are just covering their running costs.

00:47:59 lisa scott: Reacted to "Disley Parish Counci..." with ๐Ÿ‘

00:48:40 Andrew Maliphant: DISLEY PARISH COUNCIL REPORTS Finance - Dept. for Transport Electric Vehicle Chargepoint grant - ยฃ3,215 Two Electric Vehicle Chargepoints on the community centre car park โ€“ cost ยฃ4,660

21-22 annual report - Electric Vehicle ChargePoint: โ€ข The Council installed an EV ChargePoint at the Community Centre in September 2021. โ€ข The ChargePoint is averaging 60 vends per month and approx. 180 charging hours per month. โ€ข The ChargePoint has been very well received by users and usage has increased as awareness has grown in the community.

22-23 annual report - Electric Vehicle Charge Point: โ€ข The Councilโ€™s EV Charge Point at the Community Centre is averaging 71 vends per month and approx. 252 charging hours per month. โ€ข In the last 12 months over 17,000 kilowatt hours of energy was dispensed from the charge point.

00:48:58 lisa scott: Beare Green have 3 7Kw chargers that just cover their costs too, at about 39p

00:49:28 Andrew Maliphant: The Disley clerk will be helping us draft a good practice note in EVCP installation

00:53:56 lisa scott: Reacted to "Down here in deepest..." with ๐Ÿ‘

00:55:04 Andrew Maliphant: Sustainable transport is our topic for next week's banter session

00:55:32 Cara Naden: Reacted to "Sustainable transpor..." with ๐Ÿ’š

00:56:06 Stephen Murley: Reacted to "Sustainable transporโ€ฆ" with ๐Ÿ‘Œ

00:56:08 Stephen Murley: Reacted to "Down here in deepestโ€ฆ" with ๐Ÿ‘

00:56:09 Rob Rimmer: It does sound Sarah that you have a parking space problem as much as anything. What will happen I wonder when a person with a non EV vehicle finds the only space on the road is an EV space? General grumpiness? And what will happen when your EV points are full of vehicles not owned by people in the adjacent houses who then find they cannot park. Ditto. I think you should be prepared for Derbyshire CC Highways Authority to put these points to you.

00:57:23 Cara Naden: Reacted to "Down here in deepest..." with ๐Ÿ‘

00:58:06 Cara Naden: Yes car clubs are a great solution - there's a few that offer EVs like CoWheels.

00:59:10 Amanda Davis: I'm holding on to my 18 year old car, desperate for the creation of local car club. My car sits 95% of its time on my drive and really don't need to own a car.

00:59:23 lisa scott: Connected Curb will put in a cable the length of the street and put in a number of chargers but also 'blanking' points, so more chargers can be added when demand increases and bigger proportion of EVs

00:59:48 David Newman: My motorbike has only a 14.4 kWh battery.

01:00:16 lisa scott: but it doesn't weight 2.2 tonnes!

01:00:52 Amanda Davis: Octopus Energy and Midcounties Coop joint venture Younity, that I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Michaela Cryer, has volunteered to present a session. She may be able to comment on overnight tariffs for green-good

01:01:00 Andrew Maliphant: We need more Sarah Bs!

01:01:09 lisa scott: Reacted to "Octopus Energy and M..." with ๐Ÿ‘

01:01:45 Cara Naden: No many lampposts don't have a high enough electricity grid connection for fast or rapid charging..

01:02:06 Sarah Barker: My email is sarah.barker@kingshillparish.gov.uk

01:02:17 Amanda Davis: Our local experience is that the energy companies have a waiting list as long as a year to connect the charging points. Cotswold District Council car park in my parish Bourton-on-the-Water have been waiting for over a year

01:03:30 David Newman: Can also set up a controlled parking zone.

01:06:18 Jackie Jones: charging isn't likely to be a daily event for most drivers if car has a decent range

01:06:26 Stephen Murley: Great chat and info. Popping off tad early ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ™ thanks

01:07:38 Amanda Davis: I understand that Portugal is leading the way with solar canopies in carparks charging EVs

01:10:31 lisa scott: agree 100% with Sarah, you would need a lot of solar for car charging - however if you are charging from a car park a battery could give a good option, and let you charge the battery overnight on cheap rate to charge the cars during the day, but you would be looking at ยฃ10 - ยฃ20 for a big battery

01:10:47 Cara Naden: Replying to "I understand that Po..." Yay and a lot of sun in Portugal!

01:11:14 Cara Naden: Reacted to "agree 100% with Sara..." with ๐Ÿ‘

01:11:29 lisa scott: Replying to "agree 100% with Sara..." that's 10 - 20k

01:12:10 Cara Naden: PV certainly will help to reduce the electricity costs but difficult to direct supply to EV charging unless battery storage is included and then becomes costly to install at the moment.

01:14:16 Jackie Jones: Great, thanks!

01:14:24 Cara Naden: Reacted to "For groups that have..." with ๐Ÿ’š

01:14:31 Christy Crouch: This was fantastic - so useful and collaborative - thank you!!!

00:03:45 Graham Stoddart-Stones: Gov't funding? and related links

Other funding:

Other suppliers:

00:04:42 Graham Stoddart-Stones: And one exampleโ€.

00:04:50 Andrew Maliphant: EVCP at Disley parish, Cheshire

00:21:05 Amanda Davis:

00:34:10 Cara Naden: CoCharger

00:49:29 Cara Naden: Useful information, advice and guidance for net zero transport..

00:52:55 Stephen Murley: Down here in deepest Cornwall our council is probing for suggestions for ev points so they can submit a bid for levi funding in 25 this is one reason I'm here to understand more ๐Ÿ˜‡

01:14:00 Jackie Jones: For groups that have good sites and a community group for solar but don't want to have to finance and manage it for 20-odd years, there's a great scheme from Big Solar Co-op

01:14:16 Cara Naden: A useful online forum for all EV and charging related conversations

Lisa Scott <lisa.charlwood.greenparty@gmail.com> Is there a location for links and history? I'm thinking back to the discussion on EV charging in a Parish and I've just come across this, system of pavement flush chargers:
